The Social Art Complex

The Social Art Complex (TSAC) is a visual practice that helps organizations and communities make sense of complexity through visual strategy, creative collaboration, and storytelling. TSAC works with groups navigating complex social, environmental, and systemic challenges, using visuals as a shared language to support understanding, alignment, and action.

At the core of the practice is the belief that visuals are not just documentation or decoration—they are tools for thinking. TSAC integrates visual design, human-centered approaches, and social art to surface insights, clarify relationships, and communicate meaning across projects, programs, and convenings.

Meet Ashanti Gardner

...founder of The Social Art Complex, formerly Visual Scribe at Work since 2019. Ashanti is a traveling visual practitioner and artist based in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area, and she holds certifications in KMI knowledge management, LUMA design thinking, and IDEOU creative leadership. Ashanti is a former member of the International Forum of Visual Practitioners, a current member of NOVA Scribes, and a former student of Shift-IT School, where she developed her foundational skills as a visual practitioner.

Let me add that after months of book layouts, typography workspaces, placing images and design, I have such a deep appreciation for book designers and anyone using InDesign. I learned so much.

This years long project in parallel with other projects and work has been rewarding and hard. I'm so excited to have contributed. More to come later.

Closing out 2025 with a full heart.

I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities that came my way - and our way- and for everyone who found The Social Art Complex this year, as well as those who continued to walk alongside me, collaborate with me, and evolve with the work.

This year marked a shift. Moving beyond visual capture alone, and into what visuals can do—how they can activate change, support strategy, and help shape more intentional futures. The practice feels more grounded now. More activated. More centered in purpose.

I’m truly honored by those who are evolving with me into this new pathway.

Next year is about collaboration, partnership, and deeper exploration—about what becomes possible when we build with intention, heart, and care.

The work continues, and the invitation remains open.

I wish you the best, peace and love in 2026.

For me, strategy has become an art and a science.

It begins with looking at the entire ecosystem — and the many subsystems within it — rather than jumping straight to solutions...or breaking things fast.

Before deciding what to do, I believe in spending time understanding:

the people and things at the center
the relationships around them
the systems shaping choices and outcomes
the constraints, incentives, and histories in play

Direction emerges from understanding and exploration. This does not mean to live in analysis paralysis or perfectionism. It means to deliver the best we can for everything and everybody. #thesocialartcomplexllc #creativestrategy #visualpractitioner

Great weekend to practice line and stroke work.

How it started, where it went, and how it ended. On rare occasions, I have done T-shirt designs for event gatherings. This one, inspired by a past visual scribing, was a quick turnaround. The draft isn’t perfect on purpose. I was mostly concerned with laying out a visual representation of the concept.

#stillgrinding I am still here working steadily. I hope we get through the storm with our optimism and love for others intact and ready for new better systems of care and living.

I do everything by hand using either an apple pencil (in this case), brush, pen or pencil. And I do want to see how I can use AI to enchance my visual practice. Believe me, I would not want to take away the human and tactical parts of capturing and drawing live. It would not be the same, in my opinion. Just a random Monday afternoon thought.

After four years of work, I am excited to share 'The Tree of Life' cards. Created from a desire to counter the division and lack of empathy seen in this world, these cards are designed to encourage deeper understanding and connection. They help people approach challenges with empathy, seek out different perspectives, and build a shared vision.

Inspired by the baobab (bau-bab) trees for its longevity, many uses, and upside-down aesthetic, the design thinking mindset, and the power of visuals—The Tree of Life cards are a tool to foster empathy, openness, and curiosity. My hope is that they can help people have conversations that lead to greater cooperation and positive change.

I finished a another series of community engagements for a client. It’s been amazing to see how much they have accomplished and the care given to reach their vision.
